Charles Tyrrell Q.S.O, M.Th., B.A. Dean Emeritus, Nelson Cathedral

The Very Reverend Charles Tyrrell QSO, M.Th. (Oxon.), BA, SRN.

Charles was born in Liverpool UK, where he trained and worked as a State Registered Nurse in the operating theatres and on the District.  After three years in theological college in London, Charles was ordained to serve in a parish in south Liverpool, and eventually became vicar of a parish in West Lancashire.

Elaine Tyrrell QSM

Board Secretary

Elaine felt called to parish nursing and set up the first Anglican parish nurse ministry in New Zealand in 1998 as a pilot, at Nelson Cathedral, where her husband Charles served as the Dean.  In 2000, she travelled to Adelaide for her basic Faith Community Nurse (FCN) training and so began a long-term friendship with her friend and colleague, Dr Anne Van Loon who had developed the ministry in Australia.

Diane Webster RN (Ret.)

Diane was first introduced to Parish Nursing or Faith Community Nursing at the end of her Nursing degree in 2001, at the inaugural conference in Christchurch. It was an exciting concept as it entwined her faith and nursing passion. From working with Nurse Maude as a District Nurse, the concept didn’t leave and she could see the potential of this scope of practice out in the community especially within the Church.

Helen Vaughan RN

Board Member

Helen was called to Faith Community Nursing in 2007. She practiced at an Anglican church in Hamilton and was part of the Board of the NZFCNA before relocating to Australia where she was on the Board of the Australian Faith Community Nurses Association.  On her return to NZ she again joined the board of the NZFCNA and was chairperson from 2016 to 2019.

Barry has learned about faith community nursing over the last 13 years, as he is married to Helen Vaughan. He has supported her in her ministry and helped out at several conferences. He brings his governance experience to the Board having served on the Board of a Christian school and latterly as a Trustee of a Housing Trust.
